Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi expounded the merits of Dipankara Buddha:
After the birth of Dipankara Buddha, the entire world was filled with light, shining upon beings lost in darkness. Hence, He was revered as “Dipankara Buddha.” With unwavering stability, He remained untouched by evils, demons, or bad forces. His radiant light illuminates the hearts of all beings. The “heart” is most important; Shakyamuni Buddha taught the Dharma for 49 years, with this as His central focus.
Respect your teacher and cherish the path. Honor the preacher; venerate the guru; love the path He walks. What is this path? It is the path of Light, the path of Truth. Keep far from the path of evil. Only by following these instructions can one be saved; otherwise, life will be filled with suffering. Thus, let your heart be steadfast and tranquil.
This world is inherently chaotic. Yet, through the presence of a Buddha, it becomes peaceful and harmonious. Now, however, the world has entered an age without a Buddha, called the Dharma Vanishing Era—a time when Dharma is absent. After Shakyamuni Buddha entered Nirvana, Dharma ceased, and yet it still endures. Why? Because some of His disciples did not enter Nirvana with Him. They remained to spread the Dharma that the Buddha had taught, helping those with good affinities to receive the sutras—records of the Buddha’s words. These classics still circulate in the world today.
Dipankara Buddha trained Shakyamuni Buddha, preparing Him to become a Buddha in a future lifetime. Thus, the credit belongs first to the master of Shakyamuni Buddha—Dipankara Buddha.
