Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi gave a discourse to disciples and pilgrims, praising Guanshiyin Bodhisattva:
How can we explain the compassion of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva?
Compassion means love. He loves all sentient beings with boundless and immeasurable affection. Whenever someone makes a request, He responds. Yet responding to every plea is not His Vow. Where does Guanshiyin Bodhisattva come from? Many do not know. Across countless lifetimes, again and again, He has become the cherished beacon of the saha world—the beloved of sentient beings.
His compassion is timeless. As long as you seek Him, He will respond. To “respond” means to come and help you. Even without your request, if there is Affinity, He will still come to your aid. But if you do not call upon Him, you may not realize that it was He who saved you. Our great and compassionate Guanshiyin Bodhisattva seeks neither fame nor gain. When He rescues beings, He does not necessarily declare: “I, Guanyin Bodhisattva, have come to help you.”
He is also known as the “Voice-Hearer Bodhisattva.” Hearing the cries of the world, He comes to deliver beings. As long as you call to Him—whether aloud, by invoking His name, or even silently in your heart—He will come. This is truly inconceivable, and thus revered as a wondrous Dharma.
Another name is the “Bodhisattva of Wonderful Virtue.” Everything He does springs from pure and virtuous intent, free from any impurity or selfish desire. He asks for nothing, yet always gives abundantly. Such noble character deserves the love and reverence of all beings.
