Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi delivered a discourse on why we should help the beings in Hell to extinguish or reduce their sins:
The beings in Hell dwell perpetually in darkness. During this month, the gates open for them to revisit the Saha world.
Why is it called "Extinguishing or Reducing Sin"? Because while living in this world, people inevitably commit various wrongdoings and make different kinds of mistakes. In Buddhism, these wrongdoings are called "sins." The weight of one's sins determines how long they must remain in Hell and how much suffering they must endure.
People may not understand all the reasons behind this. Those who do understand will commit fewer wrongs, accumulate greater merits, and perform good deeds instead of evil ones.
