Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi gave a speech on how to reduce bad karma:
Zhongyuan Festival (Ghost Festival), to beings in both Yin and Yang Realms, is an important day. We hold this Dharma convention to bless the alive and to deliver the dead. For the alive who belong to the Yang Realm, they can gain health or longevity that they deserve; for the dead who belong to the Yin Realm, they can reduce their sin or get the chance of rebirth.
Confession is an opportunity provided by Dizang (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva. How to reflect yourself, and complete your merits in this world, Yang Realm? Avoid increasing your bad karma; do more good deeds, and speak more kind words.
No matter who you are, if you have caused some bad karma, you need to confess. Even you are a heavenly king, a government official, or from a royal family, you still have to abide to the rules of Cause and Effect.
