Holy Master Ziguang Shang Shi delivered a discourse on the causes of obstacles in spiritual cultivation:

In Mahasandhi, the Great Perfection, any Dharma practice can lead one to Achievement. Throughout history, however, although countless cultivators have practiced the Great Perfection, very few became Achievers. Cultivators are as numerous as grains of sand along the seashore, while Achievers are as rare as jewels upon a crown. This is because the path of cultivation is filled with many hindrances.

Why are there so many hindrances? What are obstacles, and why do they arise throughout one’s stages of growth, career development, and journey toward accomplishment? Many people search for causes in external conditions—examining external factors, blaming Heaven being unfair, blaming the world for being unjust, and blaming others for being difficult—yet they never blame themselves. This is the fundamental reason why beings in the Saha world are unable to attain Achievement. We call this a faulty root.
